A cookie is a small file a website asks your browser to keep, so that the site can recognise the same browser again. Newsido uses a short list of them, and this page names every one. We do not use advertising cookies and we do not use any third-party analytics service.
Newsido is operated by [COMPANY LEGAL NAME]. This policy sits alongside our Privacy Policy, which explains what we do with personal data more generally.
These are set by newsido.co.uk itself. They stay on your device, they are not readable by other websites, and none of them is used to build an advertising profile.
| Cookie | What it is for | How long |
|---|---|---|
| Session cookie (named after the site) |
Keeps you signed in and keeps one visit joined up as you move between pages. Without it, signing in is impossible. | Up to a year, or until you sign out |
| XSRF-TOKEN | Security. It proves a form or action came from Newsido and not from another site acting as you. | The visit |
| remember_web… | Only set if you ask to stay signed in. It lets you come back without typing your password again. | Until you sign out |
| theme | Remembers whether you chose the light or dark look. | 3 years |
| selected_locale | Remembers the language you picked. | 3 years |
| newsido_area newsido_area_guess |
Remembers the area you set for Around You, and whether it was your choice or our guess from your IP address. This is how local news works for readers without an account. | 1 year |
| device_id | A random identifier for this browser, so that opening the same story twice is counted once. It holds no name, email or profile, and it is not shared with anyone. | 1 year |
The first three are strictly necessary: they are what makes signing in and staying signed in possible, and the site cannot provide an account without them. The theme, language and area cookies exist only to remember a choice you made. device_id is not needed for the site to work — it exists so that our own view counts are not double-counted — and you can refuse or delete it without losing anything.
Voices clips are not hosted by us. Newsido never downloads or re-serves anybody's video: the clip plays on its own platform, in that platform's player, embedded in the page. That means that when you open a page with a TikTok or YouTube clip on it, your browser talks directly to TikTok or to Google, and they can set their own cookies and see your IP address and which page you were on.
The same is true of radio on Explore › Broadcast. We never carry, relay or re-serve a station's audio: a station either plays in its own player, embedded in the page from an address the station publishes, or the play button opens the station's own site. Either way the listening is between you and the broadcaster, so their player can set its own cookies, see your IP address and know which page you were on — and the audience figures for that listening are theirs, not ours.
We do not control those cookies and we cannot switch them off on their behalf. If you would rather they were not set at all, block third-party cookies in your browser, or do not open the Voices clips and do not start a station; the rest of Newsido is unaffected. Their names and purposes are documented by Google, by TikTok and by each broadcaster, and we cannot promise our list would stay accurate, so we point you at theirs rather than copy it out.
Every modern browser lets you see the cookies a site has set, delete them, block third-party cookies, or refuse cookies from a site altogether. The controls are usually under Settings, then Privacy. Clearing Newsido's cookies signs you out and forgets your theme, language and area; it does not delete your account or anything saved to it.
The mobile app does not use browser cookies for signing in — it holds a token on the device instead — but embedded clips inside the app behave the same way as they do in a browser.
Newsido also uses your browser's own local storage for small conveniences, such as remembering your last area so a page can draw immediately instead of waiting for the server. It stays on your device and is cleared with your browsing data.
If we add or remove a cookie we will update this page and the date at the top. Questions about anything here: [PRIVACY EMAIL]. If you are not satisfied with our answer you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.
