Developers

There is no public Newsido API today. We would rather say that plainly than publish documentation for something you cannot get a key for.

What exists, and what it is for

Newsido does have an HTTP API, and if you open the developer tools you will see the app using it. It is a private, first-party interface: it exists so that the Newsido website and the Newsido iPhone and Android apps can talk to our own servers. Every endpoint requires a session or a token belonging to a signed-in reader, it is rate-limited per account, and it is not versioned, not documented and not stable.

We change it whenever the product changes, without notice. Anything you build against it will break, probably soon, and we will not treat that as a bug. Public API access is currently switched off in our configuration, and there is no self-service page for issuing keys.

Please do not scrape us

Automated crawling, bulk downloading, mirroring or re-publishing Newsido without our written permission is not allowed — see section 5 of our Terms of Service. Nor may Newsido's content be used to train a machine-learning model without our permission.

There is a practical point behind the legal one. Most of what you would want from us is not ours to give. Newsido summarises other publishers' reporting, and the rights in that reporting belong to them. If you want news data at scale, go to the publishers — most of them have feeds, and several have proper licensing teams.

If you want to build on Newsido anyway

Get in touch. We are a small team and a real conversation is faster than a form. Email [DEVELOPERS EMAIL] and tell us:

  • who you are, and whether this is commercial;
  • what you want to build, in a sentence or two;
  • which data you would need — channels, story summaries, local areas, the standings figures, something else;
  • roughly what volume you are talking about.

We will tell you honestly whether we can help. If enough people ask for the same thing, that is what will get a public API built, and this page is where it will be documented.

Data you can already use, without asking us

Newsido is largely an assembly of public sources, and most of them are open to you directly, on their own terms:

  • News — the RSS and Atom feeds published by broadcasters, newspapers, councils and police forces.
  • GOV.UK — announcements and statistics, including its content API.
  • Office for National Statistics — the ONS API, for inflation and much else.
  • Bank of England — the interactive database, for the base rate.
  • data.police.uk — recorded crime, free and without a key.
  • postcodes.io — UK postcode and district lookup, free and without a key.
  • Open-Meteo — weather forecasts.
  • Frankfurter — exchange rates from European Central Bank data.

We use these ourselves, we are grateful for them, and we would rather point you at the source than become an unnecessary layer in front of it.

Security

If you have found a vulnerability in Newsido, please tell us before you tell anyone else. Email [SECURITY EMAIL] with enough detail to reproduce it. We will acknowledge you, keep you posted, and credit you if you want the credit. Please do not run automated scanners against the live site, do not test with other people's accounts, and do not access, change or delete data that is not yours.
